Reef Renewal Foundation Bonaire (RRFB) is one of the Caribbean’s leading coral restoration organizations. Since 2012, we have working with the community and the best available science to restore resilient, self-sustaining coral reef ecosystems through adaptive approaches, advancing and sharing knowledge to support reef recovery on Bonaire and beyond. As our organization continues to grow, we are looking for an enthusiastic and creative Communications & Outreach Officer to help share our story, strengthen our brand, and inspire people to become part of our mission.

About the Role

The Communications & Outreach Officer is responsible for implementing Reef Renewal Foundation Bonaire’s communication strategy and ensuring that the organization’s mission, impact, and achievements are communicated professionally, consistently, and effectively across all platforms.

Working closely with the Executive Director, the Communications & Outreach Officer strengthens RRFB’s institutional identity, increases public awareness and outreach, supports strategic partnerships and grant communication, and showcases the organization’s conservation impact through compelling storytelling and high-quality communication products.

Responsibilities

1.      Strategic Communications & Branding

  • Implement RRFB’s communication strategy under the direction of the Executive
  • Strengthen and safeguard RRFB’s institutional brand, public image, and reputation by ensuring consistent messaging, visual identity, and communication across all external
  • Support communication related to strategic partnerships, grants, institutional initiatives, and organizational announcements.

2.      Digital Communication & Media

  • Manage RRFB’s website, social media platforms, newsletters, and digital communication
  • Coordinate media relations, press releases, interviews, and public awareness
  • Monitor communication performance and recommend improvements to increase visibility and engagement.

3.  Storytelling & Communication Products

  • Capture and communicate RRFB’s restoration work, scientific achievements, education initiatives, and conservation impact through compelling storytelling.
  • Develop high-quality communication products including annual reports, institutional reports, presentations, publications, brochures, website content, newsletters, and promotional materials.
  • Translate scientific and technical information into engaging communication for a wide range of audiences.

4.  Community Outreach & Events

  • Coordinate the communication, promotion, and outreach of community events, educational initiatives, restoration activities, and awareness campaigns.
  • Develop communication plans and promotional materials for outreach
  • Work closely with the Director of Operations and Education & Training Officer to ensure communication effectively supports successful event delivery.

5.  Executive & Institutional Support

Support the Executive Director in maintaining strong relationships with strategic and institutional partners, major donors and sponsors, government agencies, and the wider conservation community through timely, professional, and engaging communication.

6.  Collaboration

Work collaboratively across the organization to ensure communication supports RRFB’s strategic objectives, operational activities, fundraising initiatives, education programs, and community engagement.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Environmental Communication, or a related field.

Required

  • Minimum two (2) years of professional experience in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, or a related field.
  • Experience managing digital communication channels, including websites, social media, and newsletters.
  • Experience in writing, storytelling, and developing communication

Preferred

  • Experience in the environmental, marine, or NGO
  • Ability to communicate scientific or technical information to diverse
  • Certified scuba diver or willingness to become scuba certified within the first year of employment

Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (Dutch and/or Papiamentu are an asset).
  • Strong organizational, project management, and presentation
  • Proficiency with communication and graphic design tools (e.g. Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar).

  • Excellent storyteller with strong interpersonal skills
  • Passionate about marine conservation and eager to learn about coral restoration
  • Collaborative and able to build positive relationships with staff, volunteers, partners, and our community.

Employment Conditions

  • Full-time position (40 hours per week).
  • Based in Bonaire; this is an on-site position with regular field activities.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for community events and outreach activities.
